Shifting Dullness

The faculty of the Via Christi Family Medicine Residency program formed a band the likes which has never been seen before. They call themselves “Shifting Dullness,” a name chosen from ideas submitted by residents.

“Shifting Dullness” seemed to be a good fit considering the make-up of the band. The ever present Don Seery, MD, hammers away at the bass guitar and is known for his sweet solos. Doug Neef, MD, will throw in some vocals while he shreds on the lead guitar. You can find Maurice Duggins, MD, banging out the beat on the drums. Richard Leu, MD, injects serious keyboard skills into songs like “Back to the St. Joe ER” (to the tune of “Back in the USSR”). Scott Stringfield, MD, is the lead vocalist and is sure to keep you entertained with his wild costumes.

Overall “Shifting Dullness” is a sight to be seen and they really rock! The band performs every year at the Via Christi Family Medicine Graduation activities and also during recruitment season at Call Back Weekend. The next band performance will be a charity concert to benefit the International Family Medicine Fellowship. Stay tuned for details on that concert event.

Sharp Dressed Doc (ZZ Top)

Revised Lyrics by Doug Lewis
Clean shirt, new shoes, got no clue what I’m gonna’ do!
White coat, several pens, got my new pocket Harrison’s!
On call, racing against the clock;
every nurse crazy ’bout a sharp dressed doc!

OB call, phone rings, mamma’s ready pushing out that thing!
Long plastic boots, paper gown,
lights, screaming, pushing, I feel I’m gonna’ drown,
On call, racing against the clock; every nurse crazy ’bout a sharp dressed doc!

Scrub gowns, puffy hat, I’m prepared for every body fluid splash!
Black shades, rubber gloves, looking sharp, it’s the OR that I love!
I’m in surgery, racing against the clock;
and every nurse crazy about a sharp dressed doc!

We Love to Rock and Roll (Joan Jett)

Revised Lyrics by Doug Neef and Scott Stringfield
Residents here workin’ like a well-oiled machine,
I thought we might recruit about seventeen;
The match was going strong,
Singin’ our favorite song,
Workin’ here all day long,
Gettin’ R’ done and goin’ strong,
Are you with me, yeah me, singin’ …

We love to Rock and Roll, so put another patient in the stirrups, baby!
We love to rock and roll, so come and do your time and work with me.

You smiled so I got up and asked for your name,
That don’t matter, you said, Cause it’s all the same.
So you can go home where you can be alone,
But we are movin’ on, Are you with me, yeah me?
Cause we are movin’ on and you can be with me, yeah me, workin’

Cause we love to Rock and Roll, so give another gallon of Go-Lyte, baby!
We love to rock and roll, so come and do your time and work with me.

So you can go home where you can be alone,
But we are movin’ on, Are you with me, yeah me?
Cause we are movin’ on, And you can be with me, yeah me, workin’

Cause we love to Rock and Roll, we’re all workin’ in the ER, baby!
We love to rock and roll, so come and do your time and work with me.

We love to Rock and Roll, so put another patient in the stirrups, baby!
We love to rock and roll, so come and do your time and work with me.

Cause we love to Rock and Roll, so give another gallon of Go-Lyte, baby!
We love to rock and roll, so come and do your time and work with me.

Everybody Needs a Residency to Love

Everybody needs a residency,
Everybody needs a residency to love (residency to love)
Everybody needs a residency to love (residency to love)
Some place to belong (some place to belong)
Some place to grow strong (some place to grow strong)

We need you, you, you
We need you, you, you
We need you, you, you on the days were on call.
We need you, you, you to give us you’re all.

Sometimes I feel, I feel a little sad inside,
When the faculty mistreats me, I never have a place to hide, NO!

You know people, when you do find that residency, you want to make sure that you cherish that residency, and love it, hold it, squeeze it, and please it. You want to signify your feelings with every single choice. Because it is so important to have that special residency to know, love, choose, and not to lose.

Everybody needs a residency,
Everybody needs a residency to love (residency to love) Everybody needs a residency to love (residency to love) Some place to belong (some place to belong) Some place to grow strong (some place to grow strong)

We need you, you, you
We need you, you, you
We need you, you, you on the days were on call.
We need you, you, you to give us you’re all.

Sometimes I feel, I feel a little sad inside,
When the faculty mistreats me, I never have a place to hide, NO!

We need you, you, you
We need you, you, you
We need you, you, you on the days were on call.
We need you, you, you to give us you’re all.

We need you, you, you! We need you, you, you! We need you, you, you!

Hotel Via Christi (”Hotel California” - Eagles)

Revised Lyrics by Doug Neef and Scott Stringfield
On a dark desert highway, cool wind in my hair,
Warm smell of my French fries, rising up through the air.
Up ahead in the distance, I saw a shimmering light,
My head grew heavy and my sight grew dim,
But I don’t think I’ve done it right!

There she stood in the doorway; was I under her spell?
I was thinking to myself, “This could be Heaven or this could be Hell.”
Then we toured all the buildings, and she showed me their ways,
There were voices in the back of my mind,
I thought I heard them say…

CHORUS
Better go back to the Hotel Via Christi!
It’s such a lovely place (such a lovely place), am I in the chase?
I hope there is room at the Hotel Via Christi!
March of this next year (March of this next year), Hope I make it here.

Internists staff the Unit, Res-dents’ not too nice.
She said, “They treat the family docs here like it just might be a vice!”
In the director’s chambers, from the best until the least,
There’s a family med department here, but it really seems deceased!

So I said to my host now, “How is your OB time?”
She said, “We haven’t done a C-section here since nineteen sixty nine!”
And still those voices are calling from far away,
Wake me up in the middle of this dream, and I hear them say…

CHORUS

Bad to the Bone

On the day that I came here, it was starting to rain.
The rain turned to snow, I began to complain.
I don’t want to move here, I’d feel all alone.

Then I saw Via Christi, this is bad to the bone.

Going Via Christi, it’s THE place for me,

Cause’ I’m wanting to be, Bad to the Bone.

My classmates all asked me, what are you doing now?
Are you going to Kansas? They got nothing but cows!
You know it’s so flat there, where the buffalo roam,
But now that I’ve been there, this one’s bad to the bone.
This is so sad, It’s driving me mad,

They tell me I’m bad, Bad to the Bone.

The residents are awesome, do so many things.
And the faculty doctors, well they play and they sing.
Gotta’ go Via Christi, gotta’ make it my home,
Cause of all the places I’ve been to, this one’s bad to the bone.
Snap out of your trance, THIS is your chance,

This is the BIG DANCE, Bad to the Bone.

Right Here (Good Lovin’)

Right Here! Right Here! Right Here! Right Here!

I was feelin’ so bad, I asked my family doctor just what I had. I said, “Doctor” (Doctor), Mr. MD (Doctor)
Now can you tell me where I should be? (Doctor)

He said, Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah (yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah) Yes indeed,
All I really need is …

Right Here! (Now gimme that Via Christi)
Right Here! (All you need is right here)
Right Here! (Sweet Sweet Via Christi)
Right Here!
Match list please, please treat me right (Treat me right)
Don’t you want your student to be alright? (be alright)
I said, “Match List” (Match List) now it’s for sure (It’s for sure)
I got the fever, yeah, and they got the cure (got the cure)
Everybody, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, (yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah)
Yes indeed, All I really need is …

Right Here! (Now gimme that Via Christi)
Right Here! (All you need is right here)
Right Here! (Sweet Sweet Via Christi)

{REPEAT to the end}

Hey! Uh, Huh, Huh Hey! Uh, Huh, Huh
What I like about you, you know you see things so clear.
Look at your class, don’t let this pass,
you really, really should be here, yeah!
Is something whispering in YOUR ear?
Telling you the truth that you should be here, cause’ it’s true!
That’s what we like about you (What I like about you)
That’s what we like about you (What I like about you)
That’s what we like about you (What I like about you)
That’s what we like about you (What I like about you)

2 Measures - HEY

Back in the St. Joe ER

Lyrics by Doug Neef and Scott Stringfield

Flew into the ER at the sound of the page, didn’t get to sleep last night.
Overdoses, runny noses, all the rage, I wonder if I’m livin’ right,
I’m back in the St. Joe ER.
You don’t know how lucky you are boy,
Back in the St. Joe ER.

Running to the clinic at the call of the nurse, never seem to be on time.
Just about when I think I’m finally catchin’ up, ER doctor’s on the line,
I’m back in the St. Joe ER,
You don’t know how lucky you are boy,
Back in the St. Joe, back in the St. Joe, back in the St. Joe ER.

Well the ER docs really knock me out, they leave the rest behind,
And Dr. Vada really makes me scream and shout,
That ER’s always, always on my, my, my, my, my mind…

GUITAR SOLO

I’m back in the St. Joe ER
You don’t know how lucky you are boy,
Back in the St. Joe, back in the St. Joe, back in the St. Joe ER.

Well the ER docs really knock me out, they leave the rest behind,
And Dr. Vada really makes me scream and shout,
That ER’s always, always on my, my, my, my, my mind …owww!

Show me to the patient that I’m supposed to see,
Dr. Poge says he’s dyin’, When I finally went and really checked him out,
actually he’s doing fine,
I’m back in the St. Joe ER
You don’t know how lucky you are boy,
back in the St. Joe, back in the St. Joe, back in the St. Joe ER.

Should I Stay or Should I Go (The Clash)

Lyrics by Doug Neef and Scott Stringfield

Aaaah!

Stringfield, you gotta’ let me know,
Should I stay or should I go?
If you take away my fears,
I’ll be here for three full years.
Come on and let me know,
Should I stay or should I go?

It’s always tease, tease, tease,
You’re happy when I’m on my knees.
You say, “I’ll put you number one.”
You’ll be here when match is done,
Come on and let me know,
Will you stay or will you go?

Should I stay or should I go now?
Should I stay or should I go now?
If I go there will be trouble,
I want to stay, don’t burst my bubble.
So you gotta let me know,
Should I stay or should I go?

This indecision bothers me,
If you don’t want me set me free,
Exactly where am I supposed to go?
Will it be `yes’ or is it `no’?
Come on and let me know,
Should I stay or should I go?

BRIDGE

Should I stay or should I go now?
Should I stay or should I go now?
If I go there will be trouble,
I want to stay, don’t burst my bubble.
So you gotta let me know,
Should I stay or should I go?

Should I stay or should I go now?
Should I stay or should I go now?
If I go there will be trouble,
I want to stay, don’t burst my bubble.
So you gotta let me know,
Should I stay or should I go?
